Stargazing & Storytelling, at Allotment Soup!

 

Join us at Art Gene’s community growing space, Allotment Soup, to hear resident artist Louise Beer and Roy Chisem of the Furness and South Lakeland Astronomical Society talk about astronomy, ecology, and how we can have hope and wonder in the face of climate crisis.

(Depending on the evening’s visibility) we will look through the Astronomical Society’s telescopes, see some of the incredible images they have managed to capture, and talk about the challenges modern astronomers face. There will be writing activities based around space, ecology, and our personal associations with nature – with chances to share and tell stories. All under the dome of our allotment poly-tunnels.

This event is part of a week long programme of events with Louise, called Sky & Soup.

Louise Beer is a New Zealand born artist based in Margate. Her work explores humanity’s evolving relationship with Earth’s environments and the cosmos through installation, sound, photography, writing, and participatory practice. She is currently Artist in Residence with Art Gene, and the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge.

Roy Chisem is a retired computer scientist and teacher. He is a member of Furness and South Lakeland Astronomy Society. He was drawn into astronomy by his then 5 year old granddaughter who wanted to see the planets who’s names she had memorised. The Furness and South Lakeland Astronomical Society, provide a meeting places for amateur astronomers of all ages, promote astronomy in the local community, provide education, and offer support to enthusiasts.

Homemade soup from our allotment veg will be provided, with vegan and gluten free options available. If you have any allergies, please make us aware of these in/after your booking.

Remember to dress for the cold and rainy weather. There is a pathway at Allotment Soup, but it can get pretty muddy.

Everyone is welcome!

But under 16s should be accompanied by a guardian.
