TORN TOGETHER

Torn Together is Art Gene’s latest digital programme curated by artist Sophie Lindsey. It will run throughout Spring 2025, sharing work from six artists and collaborations in a series of online exhibitions, events, and interventions.

Being together is universally seen as a positive, whether it is through companionship, connections, or simply sharing spaces with others. It is also an aspiration that we have as individuals; to have all the elements of our lives harmoniously organised so we can effortlessly take on more. However, this imagined version of unity rarely lives up to reality, as all the ways we come together bring their own complexities and tensions. 

Torn Together explores the contradictions and possibilities of an uneasy togetherness; one that considers the anxieties and discomfort that tie us to each other, the places we inhabit, and other living things. From the ways we relate in social situations, in person and online; the histories and fractures we inherit and enact; to the everyday rituals that help us to process, soften, and care for ourselves and others.

 

Through work that explores digital anxieties, rest and repair, sharing secrets with trees, masking as ritual, coexisting with pests, and earth-worm malware, Torn Together explores the different ways and tensions of being together in this world.

With artists Alice Banfield, Gustiele Fistaról, GWENBA, Molly Kent, Soft Radicle, and Sohyun Lee, this programme will consider how we collectively create and cross boundaries, and the things we need to mask, conceal, or acknowledge in order to be together.
